About Grayton Beach, FL

There wasn’t much for miles around when Army Major Charles T. Gray built a home in what is now Grayton Beach in 1885. Five years later, two Army Generals arrived and began plotting out roads. They named the area after Gray.

In the early 20th century, Grayton Beach began to take shape as a beach resort. Although the natural terrain made it difficult to get to the resort, it still attracted many families including the Butlers, who would become instrumental in helping the village grow.

As infrastructure in the South Walton area improved, more people began making the trip to Grayton Beach for the summer holidays. The general store became a community hub, as did the dance hall, which hosted parties of up to 100 people on the weekends. The dance hall is now the famous Red Bar.

Today Grayton Beach retains its laid-back beach village atmosphere. Residents have resisted rampant development, so you won’t find massive condo developments or strip malls. In addition, the government has made efforts to preserve the natural environment surrounding the community.
